Inspiration from Two Cultures
I’ve always been fascinated by the mortise and tenon joint because it connects wood without nails or glue, symbolizing harmony between humanity and nature. This intricate technique showcases the wisdom of ancient Chinese craftsmen. I decided to combine this traditional craftsmanship with the symbolic power of Māori Pounamu, which represents strength and ancestral heritage.

Combining Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Technology
Throughout the creation process, I combined watercolor painting with digital technology. I began by hand-painting the details of the mortise and tenon structure in watercolor to showcase its precision. Then, I used 3D modeling to transform the design into a three-dimensional form and 3D printed it to ensure the structure was accurately represented. For coloring, I integrated the green tones of Pounamu with the natural hues of wood, creating a unique visual effect that symbolizes the blending of Eastern and Western cultures.
Challenges and Breakthroughs in Creation
The creative process was challenging, especially in balancing traditional and modern elements. I continually adjusted the design and materials to ensure every detail accurately conveyed my artistic vision. In the end, this work received a perfect score from the IB program, which was a great acknowledgment of my efforts and a testament to the training I received at the school.
